Q. What is the Cost Sharing Funeral Service (CSFS)?

The Cost Sharing Funeral Service (CSFS) is a community-based cost-sharing funeral program administered by the Ontario Muslim Association (OMA). It ensures that when a registered member passes away, all other members contribute a small, fixed amount (usually $7) toward the funeral expenses.

Q. Who is eligible to join CSFS?

Membership is available to all Muslims who are 18 years or older and legally residing in Canada, or to international students who hold valid authorization to stay. International students are required to send proof of their stay in Canada to the organization via email or mail by September each year. If the principal applicant or their spouse’s parents reside at the same address, OMA encourages them to submit separate applications.

Q. How does the CSFS work when a member passes away?

  • When a registered member dies, all other members are notified, and OMA will contribute the funeral costs ($7000.00)For eample, if there are 1000 members and the funeral service costs $7000, every member would need to contribute $7 via automatic withdrawal to cover the expense. If you have registered 5 members for the Cost Sharing Funeral Service (CSFS), including yourself, then OMA will debit $7 multiplied by 5 = $35 from your bank account.
  • The amount collected goes directly to cover the funeral expenses of the deceased member.

Q. What are the benefits of joining the CSFS?

  • Peace of mind that your funeral expenses will be covered
  • Affordable for all participants
  • A collective form of sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity)
  • Reduces the financial burden on the deceased’s family
  • OMA doesn’t have any overwhelming operational costs

Q. What is the annual registration fee?

There is no yearly fee; however, if you wish to update your bank account information, OMA will charge $1 for pre-authorization.

Q. How are members notified of a death and a contribution request?

OMA sends out an email or SMS notification to all active members each time a funeral contribution is needed. Payment methods and date are included in the message.

Q. What happens if I miss a payment or stop contributing?

  • Failure to contribute when requested can lead to suspension from the program.
  • Members must respond promptly to remain in good standing and retain coverage.
  • In the event of insufficient funds, the signing members shall be held responsible for all fees incurred by the bank.

Q. Can I enroll my entire family?

Yes, the primary applicant can enroll each family member (including children). Each person will be treated as a separate member for contribution and payout purposes. For example, if the primary applicant added spouse and three kids as members during registration, then you have registered 5 members, including yourself. If the cost sharing is $7 for each member, then OMA will charge $7 multiplied by 5 = $35 from the pre-authorized bank account.

OMA encourages every adult person to join separately as a member.

Q. What will happen if a member dies outside of Canada?

Members will receive compensation for funeral expenses, but OMA has a limit of $7,000. If they wish to transport the deceased from the country where the death occurred, OMA will not cover any costs unless there are no burial facilities available in that country. In order to receive the funds, OMA will require a Death certificate and receipts for the funeral expenses.

Q. What will happen if someone wants to send the body outside of Canada?

Unfortunately, OMA doesn’t provide any costs for that individual as we comply with Shariah guidelines. Shariah does not allow the dead body to be prepared to be sent to other countries.

Q. Will OMA charge the deceased person?

OMA doesn’t charge the deceased person. OMA charges all living members.

Q. OMA charges $0.50 as an operational cost with cost-sharing costs from each member. If I have three dependents with me, then how much OMA will charge me from my account for operational costs?

If you have 3(three) dependents with you, that means a total of 4(four) members. OMA will charge $0.50 X 4 = $2.00 as operational costs

Q. If I have three dependents with me, then how much OMA will charge me in total?

If you have 3(three) dependents with you, that means a total of 4(four) members registered for cost-sharing funeral service.

For example, the sharing costs for each member are $7.00, then the total charge will be as follows:

Cost sharing funeral costs: $7 X 4 = $28.00

Operational Costs: $0.50 X 4 = $2.00

Total: $28 + $2 = $30.00

Q. What currency is used by OMA for its operations?

OMA functions with Canadian currency. All prices and calculations presented on this website are in Canadian dollars.
